Revolver/USA: Enemy of the Sun
Shadows (The End)
****1/2All those formulaic metalcore dudes could learn a thing or two from
Waldemar Sorychta (ex-Grip Inc.), founder and songwriter for Enemy of the
Sun. The group’s debut, Shadows, is a masterful mélange of aggression and
melody that’s immediately engaging and deceptively complex. The songs are
studies in contrast, and not just heavy verses against soaring choruses.
The band constantly see-saws between rage and nuance, incorporating heavy,
off-meter rhythms, lilting pop hooks, epileptic keyboards and exotic
instrumentation, while somehow remaining coherent. “Lives Based on
Conflicts” segues roaring vocals and surging guitars worthy of Machine
Head with merry-go-round keyboards and nagging vocals reminiscent of Faith
No More, while “Feel the Beating” weaves Spanish acoustic guitar through a
framework of squealing licks, stammering riffs and tuneful singing.
Stunning. – Jon Wiederhorn
